Gary Mulligan had a shot cleared off the line and Dennis Oli struck the top of the crossbar from 18 yards as the visitors bossed most of the early play.

But Vale gradually gained a foothold in a lively contest and took the lead with an outstanding goal in the 28th minute. Dave Brammer and Lee Collins were involved before Steve Thompson set up Marc Richards to drive home an unstoppable 20-yard shot.

Gills manager Mark Stimson withdrew Mulligan and pushed Oli forward after the break and it took him less than four minutes to blast an equaliser. The Vale defence failed to clear their lines and Oli hammered the loose ball into the top corner from 16 yards.

Gillingham continued to dominate and went ahead in the 69th minute when Adam Miller lobbed Joe Anyon after controlling John Nutter's cross.

Simeon Jackson converted a penalty three minutes later after Anthony Griffith handled and that secured the visitors a second away win in four days.
